Pollution from COVID 💀
As Coronavirus gets worse, the environmental pollution is getting worse. There are two representative reasons: mask and plastic. The use of masks is increasing day by day as the COVID is getting worse. As the number of confirmed cases of coronavirus increases, there are more problems with masks. It’s hard to buy it, but there are no disposal guidelines on how to deal with throwing it away, so the way to dispose of the mask has emerged as a new concern. Ordinary people are advised to throw it away in standard plastic bags without specific instructions, so environmental pollution is quite serious. The number of discarded masks that flowed into the sea last year amounted to 1.56 billion. This is threatening marine life greatly. Disposable masks are made of ferromagnetic compounds, making them difficult to recover and not recyclable. They are known to take about 450 years to decompose.
The amount of plastic waste as well as mask is another source of pollution. This is because the amount of disposable plastic waste is increasing significantly as food packaging and delivery are increasing due to the spread of Coronavirus. In Korea, the amount of waste plastic increased 14.6% year-on-year as food delivery increased. If waste plastic is not recycled properly, it will burn, which could increase the amount of carbon emissions and adversely affect global warming. In addition, the number of non-recyclable plastics that are discarded is increasing, but the problem is becoming more serious due to a lack of landfills. For these problems, we need a sense of awareness and responsibility for environmental pollution.
