Hope to Breathe in Clean Air 💨
Laws and Regulations of Air Pollution in the world
As humans have developed their lives gradually mostly since the industrial revolution began, they started to destroy the earth by using natural sources. Also, as industries have expanded, many factories were established and they have emitted a huge amount of air pollutants to the atmosphere of the earth. These harmful air pollutants have affected us in negative ways in many aspects of our lives. So people began to find the ways to reduce emission of air pollutants and to diminish detrimental effects on human health. The one of the ways to do so was to enact laws and to make regulations of air pollution. Many countries established their own laws and regulations of air pollution and enforced them to make the air quality better.
In the world, numerous international laws have been made in history.
- Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution in Geneva in 1979
- Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer in 1985
- Montreal Protocol in 1987
- U.S.-Canada Air Quality Agreement in 1991
- United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in 1992
In the United States, the Clean Air Act was created in 1970. The Clean Air Act is the federal law which regulates the emission of harmful air pollutants especially from transportation. It was used by EPA of the US to found National Ambient Air Quality Standards. EPA tries to decrease bad air pollutants to be emitted and to improve the health of people and the quality of lives.
In the United Kingdom, the Clean Air Act was established in 1956. The Clean Air Act was made in response to the Great Smog in London in 1952 which killed about 12,000 people. This act restricted the emission of gasses and dust from the houses. Also, it decreased smoke and sulfur dioxide from the houses.
In South Korea, the Fine Dust Seasonal Management System was introduced on December 1st, 2020. This system regulates the emission of fine dust from many fields of life. It restricts run of transportation which emission level is 5, prevents illegal incineration of trash, and monitors illegal emission of fine dust in factories.
In addition to these laws and regulations, there are tons of acts and systems in the world and they are being made even now. Through these many laws and regulations, we can know that people try to lessen the emissions of noxious air pollutants and to improve public health and public welfare. To breathe in clean air, we all need to come together and change the air qualities by solving problems that we face.
